Newsletter Term 2 Week 10

The New Archbishop of Hobart

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Anthony Ireland as the new Archbishop of Hobart, succeeding Archbishop Julian Porteous. Bishop Ireland brings extensive experience in parish ministry, academic and spiritual formation, and health care ministry. His episcopal motto, “Confirm, strengthen and support” (1 Peter 5:10), reflects his commitment to the community. We extend our gratitude to Archbishop Porteous and look forward to welcoming Bishop Ireland.
From The Principal
It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the academic year already. We have had a very productive first Semester and have been involved in many experiences that have all added to your child’s academic learning, social and spiritual development. All these experiences and interactions contribute to shaping our students into the type of person they are today and setting strong foundations for their future development.
On Monday, parents of students from Prep to Grade 6 would have received your child’s report for Semester One. Mid-year reports are an opportunity to celebrate your child’s achievements as well as identify goals and opportunities for future development. At St Anthony’s, we have a culture of feedback and consider it a crucial part of your child’s academic journey. Without identifying where our students are at we can not plan for the next steps in their learning. By setting goals and next steps, we are also assisting our students in developing a growth mindset and a ‘can-do’ disposition where they work hard and stay focused in order to achieve.
Last week I was fortunate enough to attend my first ‘Showcase” at St Anthony’s. As I walked around the different grades, a few things became evident. Students were extremely proud of their work and really enjoyed sharing it and explaining it to their parents. The number of parents who attended, as well as additional family members, showed how important learning is to our community and the importance of working together for the benefit of our children. Thank you to our staff who planned the evening so well to make it a successful and positive evening for all involved. All of these factors made Showcase a huge success and a testament to the importance of all working together to achieve amazing things in our community.
This term we will be farewelling Miss Olivia Kenyon, teacher assistant, from our community. Olivia has been with us since the start of 2025 and has contributed a lot during her time at St Anthony’s. We would like to thank her for all her hard work and dedication, and the positive impact she has had during her time with us. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Olivia all the very best as she dedicates her time to studying.
Pupil Free Day
A reminder that Monday 21st July, Day 1 of Term 3, is a Pupil Free Day. This allows our staff to participate in a statewide Catholic Education Tasmania professional learning day on the Science of Learning, a part of the Insight project.
Have a wonderful and restful break with family and loved ones, and we will see you back at St Anthony’s on Tuesday, 22nd of July, which will no doubt be another fruitful, positive and productive semester.
Sincerely,
Adele Murphy
Principal

Caritas Australia Visit
On Monday 23rd June, St Anthony’s was honoured to welcome Penny Edman, Diocesan Director from Caritas Australia. Penny visited to personally thank our students for their generous support, kindness, and compassion shown throughout Project Compassion 2025.
It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the impact of our school community’s efforts in helping others and to learn more about the important work Caritas continues to do around the world.

CET attendance policy
Catholic Education Tasmania’s attendance policy has been updated. The purpose of the policy is to outline the expectations and obligations for all parents/guardians of students and all independent students enrolled in Catholic schools in Tasmania supporting consistent attendance at school. It states that after 5 consecutive days or an unexplained pattern of absence or 10 days of absence in a school year you may receive a letter regarding your child’s absenteeism and the impact on their learning. Given the number and length of term breaks, it is expected that families will arrange holidays during these times. Holidays are expected to be recorded as unauthorised absences. Please fill out the following form if you are taking an unauthorised holiday during the school term.

NAIDOC Week
In HaSS this week, St Anthony’s students celebrated NAIDOC week through working with Bianca Templar, a First Nations culture sharer and artist. Bianca created stamps and stencils depicting objects of importance to Tasmanian First Nations peoples and culture. The student’s used these to print onto a canvas bag. Creations made by each student were unique and thoughtful. They look amazing, well done St Anthony's!
NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In 2025, we come together under this year’s theme to honour the voices, stories, and contributions of First Nations communities across the country. It’s a week of learning, connection, and respect—an opportunity for all Australians to walk together towards a shared future.
This year, St Anthony's students celebrated NAIDOC Week with Aboriginal Knowledge Sharers, Djuker Willis Hart and Bianca Templar. Djuker opened the week with a cleansing ceremony and spoke with students about his culture, stories, and traditions.
