Term 3 Week 8 2023
We learn, we pray, we lead, we care.
We follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
Our mission is to serve God and to serve others; to strive to be our best
selves at all times and to forgive ourselves and others when we fall short.
Just like Jesus.
From the Acting Principal
Dear members of the St Anthony’s community,
As we are now well into Spring, we often turn our attention to the changes that are occurring around us. These include the changes in temperature, leaves and blossoms on trees and new animals being born. But these aren’t the only changes occurring around us. There are slower, often unnoticed changes occurring.
From September 1 to October 4 (Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi), we have what is known as the Season of Creation - an annual period of time where we are called to focus on the changes to our environment that are impacting us and our world in a negative way. We are called to reflect on the causes of these changes and to respond with action.
This week at St Anthony’s, we have commenced a recycling program by placing the yellow lid recycling bins around our school. At Gathering on Monday morning I spoke to all of the students around the positive changes we can make by simply separating our waste and recycling, rather than putting it all in the red bins to go into landfill.
So far, the students have started this initiative well, and we hope it will just become a natural part of what we do at St Anthony’s, to follow in the footsteps of St Francis and care for our earth and creation.
On Tuesday evening, I had the privilege of attending Singfest which is a wonderful showcase of school choirs from the Greater Launceston region. Our school choir participated and were extraordinary! Their rendition of When I Grow Up (from the musical Matilda by Tim Minchin) was mesmerising. A special thanks to our Arts Teacher, Mrs Natalie Zegveld, who prepared the students so well and fostered a love of singing and performing. Such learning opportunities for our students are invaluable and require so many hours of additional work with the required planning, preparation and rehearsal. Thanks also to the parents who supported their children with encouragement and by attending this event.
Wishing you all a wonderful rest of the week!
Kind regards,
Paul Mannion
On Tuesday our school choir had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Singfest - a massed choir event where we joined in with another 200 students to celebrate music and song. The most wonderful part of Singfest is that it is a non competitive event. All choirs learn the same 7 songs to sing together as a group then individual choirs learn one song to perform on their own. Our very own Asha Blyth was selected to sing a solo part in one of the massed choir songs and she did a fantastic job. Well done to everyone involved.
Father's Day Assembly 2023
Thank you to all the Dads and Father figures who came along to our Father's Day celebrations this morning! We hope you enjoyed your morning as much as the children did!

Sacrament of Confirmation
On Saturday 9th September a group of students made the Sacrament of Confirmation at The West Tamar Parish along with Archbishop Julian Porteous and Father Martin. Thank you to the students and their families for participating in such an important sacrament within the Catholic Church, we are incredibly proud of the way that you have taken on the responsibilities that come with being a part of our Community Parish.
Principal for a Day
Principal for a Day was an amazing experience for me. I loved how we could walk around the school and everybody said “Hi Principals.” We walked around the classrooms and checked if everybody had sunscreen and if it was in date. I learnt that being a Principal is not just about being in charge of the school, it’s about organising and creating events, sending and receiving lots and lots of emails and not just being the “boss” of the school, but being a leader. Something that was unexpected was that in a meeting, that the principals attended, Mr Perry brought out a packet of biscuits. I thought that it was funny because when my mum and I went grocery shopping the day before and my mum saw that exact same packet and said to me “Imagine if you brought those to school and took them out in the staff room!” I replied with “Yeah, that would be hilarious!” Principal for a day was wonderful and I can’t believe how much fun it was.
Thank you,
Mendoza
5/6 Gala Day
Last Friday, our Grade 5/6 students braved the rain and participated in a Gala Day with students from the other Catholic schools in Launceston. The purpose of these days are to enable students to participate in a variety of physical activities that enhance health and wellbeing and apply different skills and strategies in a range of movement situations that support fair play and inclusive participation. Well done to all our students who represented our school so well and thank you to the staff and adult volunteers who enable these opportunities to occur.
Indigenous Literacy Day 2023
On Wednesday 6th September St Anthony’s celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day 2023. Students gathered in the hall to celebrate stories, cultures and languages. “Would you cuddle up with a jurru? Do you have a tjikiwan dog at home? And what would you do if you saw a sneaky kyembal?" asks ILF Ambassador Jessica Mauboy.
Students jumped on a virtual plane to Barunga in the Northern Territory, Rubibi (Broome) in North Western Australia and Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, to find out!
Students got to hear First Nations peoples’ stories and learn some new words in Kriol, Yawuru and Thaynakwith Languages.
Important information regarding Canteen Orders
Please note that all orders for the canteen close at 8:30am on the morning of the day you wish to order. No late orders will be accepted. Additionally, if a student is unwell and does not attend school cancellations of their order will need to be prior to 9:30am. Please call the office and we will connect you to Emina in the canteen to discuss a suitable solution.
Please check the date on which you are placing the order, we are noticing a lot of people selecting the incorrect date therefore the children do receive any lunch. We do endeavor to provide them with something i.e. a toasted sandwich etc. If this is the case, you will be notified to provide payment via cash the following day.
