2024 Important Dates
From the Principal
Dear families and friends of St Anthony’s,
Thank you for such a wonderful year filled with many, many highlights! It is hard to believe that we are at the end of another year because it seems to have moved so quickly.
Another year of growth and joy and lots and lots of learning. Our staff and students have worked really hard (while still enjoying their learning). It has been a pleasure to see it in action and our results have shown the fruits of that hard work.
This year I have been particularly proud of the professional learning that our staff have taken on and how open they have been to implementing major changes to their practice. Because of their openness we have been able to lead the way for Catholic Education in Tasmania. Quite sincerely, what our teachers are doing in our classrooms is at the cutting edge of the latest research into the ‘Science of Learning’ that we are implementing as a system in Tasmania. This is a fantastic achievement for a school of our size.
Individually our students have had many highlights both academically and in the sporting arena and have always represented themselves and our school with pride. I am sure that will continue tonight with our ‘Carols in the Courtyard’ and I hope to see you all there.
As always, although we are busy, this is such a great time of year to embrace the festivities and the frivolity and the fun. I hope that you are able to take the time as a family over this season of Advent to reflect on what an amazing year it has been.
Finally, I would like to thank you again for your support and encouragement throughout the year and from me personally, I wish you and your families an enjoyable, safe and happy Christmas!
Sincerely,
Jason Perry
Principal
Prayer
Vinnies Hampers
A big thank you to those families who donated to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Eric picked up the hampers this week and they will be distributed to those in need in the coming weeks.
Annual Concert & Awards Evening
Recently, we celebrated the Catholic Schools Annual Concert and Awards Evening. Students showcased their musical capabilities, by performing musical arrangements with students from the other Catholic Schools in Launceston. To end the evening, awards were presented to each school, highlighting those students who demonstrated a combination of hard work, outstanding musicianship and effort.
We congratulate our 2024 St Anthony’s Catholic School Award Winners:
Excellence Awards
Band: Mendoza Moore-Rojas
Orchestral Strings: Miette Wood
Endeavour Awards
Band: Baylin Folo
Orchestral Strings: Francesca Roberts
Congratulations to all our musical students on their hard work and dedication this year, and a big thank you to the team at St Patrick's College, Launceston for not only hosting this event, but for all their hard work during the year, nurturing and teaching our students in their music program.
Kinder Nativity Play
Last week, our kindergarten students performed their Nativity play. We couldn't be more proud of all their hard work and dedication to making this a memorable experience for everyone in attendance. From angels to inn-keepers and even some adorable little lambs all the hard work and preparation definitely paid off!
Congratulations to all of the students and their teachers for a job well done. You all looked absolutely precious!!
Christmas Parade
Last Saturday, our students participated in the Launceston Christmas Parade, and what a way to start the Christmas season!
Thank you to all our elves for coming to help Santa - you all looked amazing and in the words of Santa himself, you were ‘The best group of elves he has ever had!’
Thank you to parents for allowing your children to participate and for being our photographers. We appreciate you all.
Prep Excursion
On Tuesday 21st November, the Prep class went on an excursion to the Hagley Farm School Visitor Centre as part of our Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) unit of work of Daily Life: Now and Then.
The students experienced many activities throughout the day, including a tractor ride, meeting farm animals, and experiencing how school and life was like in the past.
As you can see, we had a great time!
Grade 6 Leavers Dinner
Last evening, our Grade 6 students had the opportunity to dress up and celebrate the conclusion of their primary school education at St Anthony’s with our annual Leavers Dinner. This was well attended by staff and students, and a wonderful evening was had by all and many photos taken upon arrival!
A sincere thank you to Miss White and Mr Mcloughlin for their organisation of this special event.
Grade 2 Sharing: Water Awareness Program
Recently, Grades 1, 2 and 3 participated in our swimming program. Students had to walk to the pool, do their best in their lesson, and then walk back to school. Here are a few things we saw and learnt along the way.
We learnt the importance of walking safely along the busy highway.
We did “Greet, Treat, Speak’ when we saw people in our community and represented St Anthony’s, with pride.
Some of us learnt how to use a noodle or kickboard to move through the water.
We learnt how to be brave and jump off the edge.
We learnt how to stay afloat with our legs out and looking up at the sky.
We learnt how to be careful in deep water.
We learnt to skull in the water, by only using our hands to move ourselves along.
We said thank you to our instructors each day. Janine made a special card for the Riverside Pool and they absolutely loved it.
We saw a dead wallaby covered in a blanket of maggots! It was awesome!
We learnt how to say hi to a truck and they gave us a beep in return.
The truck drivers had a huge smile on their faces and we think it made their day. Our record was 24 beeps in one day.
We also made a new furry friend along the way.
We are proud of the progress we made during the two weeks and will put our new skills to use this Summer holidays.
We loved the swimming program and hope you enjoy watching our video of some of the fun times we had.
First Holy Communion
Congratulations to our amazing students who have completed their Sacrament of First Eucharist recently. These students have taken an important step in their faith, and this milestone serves as a reminder of the love and grace that surrounds us all.
As you continue to grow in your faith, may you always remember the significance of this occasion and the blessings that come with it. Thank you to everyone who came together to make this opportunity possible.
Kinder 2024 Orientation
Over the past few weeks we have welcomed our 2024 Kindergarten children and parents to St Anthony’s for their orientation sessions. The students settled in well and engaged in a range of play-based activities. We can't wait to have you all join our St Anthony’s community in 2024!
Colour Run
On Tuesday we had our Colour Run. It was great to see so many students and parents participating, even if some were almost unrecognisable afterwards!
Thank you to Emily, Hugo and Alice (Gr 6) for coming up with the idea and helping staff set up the course. Also, thank you to Olive (Gr 5) for coming to us with a charity to donate the proceeds to, which is Tassie Mums. Tassie Mums, is a not for profit organisation providing aid to disadvantaged Tasmanian children.
Carols in the Courtyard
Tonight we are excited to have our ‘Carols in the Courtyard’ which promises to be a wonderful whole school event, in which all classes are presenting a couple of Christmas Songs. We hope that all students will be able to participate.
Families are welcome to bring BYO food, drinks, blanket, chairs and Christmas Spirit! The coffee van will also be on-site. We ask that any high back chairs are on the paved courtyard area, so viewing isn't restricted.
Please note that students will need to be supervised by their parents/carers and the playground/ovals will be out of bounds as there is no staff supervision. Details are in the attached flyer.
2024 Student Leadership
Over the past few weeks, our Grade 5 students have been engaged in some leadership development opportunities and activities. This includes writing a leadership speech in a persuasive style of writing.
Recently, some of our Grade 5 students nominated for Student Leadership positions and they had the opportunity to present speeches followed by voting by staff and Grade 5/6 students. This process is designed to simulate the election process as covered in the Year 5 HaSS Learning Area of the Australian Curriculum.
We will be able to announce our 2024 student leaders very soon!
Schools Triathlon Challenge
This event was held in Devonport on Friday 24th November. This year, 28 St Anthony’s students from Grades 3 - 6 participated as individuals, in a team or in some cases - both! This year saw a record number of entries with 1843 students from Primary schools across the North and North West. Congratulations to all participants, who represented our school so well. Thank you to the staff who enabled this event to happen.
Catholic Schools Instrumental Music Program 2024
Please click on the link below for information regarding the Catholic Schools Instrumental Music Program. This program is available to Year 3 - 6 students in 2024.
Please note that while this program is provided by St Patrick’s College, it is held at St Anthony’s and costs are collected via Compass. I would encourage all parents to consider the costs associated with this program as we may expect an upfront payment before accepting enrolments into this program.
